Guedel Airways

Guedel airways are plastic, tubular oropharyngeal airway adjuncts designed to maintain an unobstructed airway by preventing the tongue from covering the epiglottis in unconscious or anesthetized patients. They feature a hard bite block to prevent airway occlusion, rounded edges to minimize trauma, and are color-coded for size identification

Brand:
    • Material: Made from non-toxic, non-irritant, semi-rigid polyethylene (PE) polymer.
    • Structure: Comprises a hollow, curved tube that conforms to the oropharyngeal anatomy, with a “stepless” path that allows for suction catheter insertion.
    • Bite Block: An integral, firmer plastic piece at the proximal end prevents the patient from biting down and obstructing the tube or injuring the tongue.
    • Sizing: Color-coded for rapid identification, with sizes typically ranging from 000 (smallest/neonatal) to 5 or 6 (largest/adult).
    • Insertion: Usually inserted upside down or sideways and rotated

once the tip reaches the back of the mouth, ensuring the tongue is pushed forward.

    Clinical Indications and Benefits:
    • Airway Maintenance: Used during or following general anesthesia to maintain airway patency.
    • Unconscious Patients: Indicated for patients with lost upper airway muscle tone.
    • CPR: Facilitates ventilation during resuscitation.
    • SAFETY: Prevents tongue-biting and provides a pathway for suctioning secretions.
    Contraindications and Precautions:
    • Should not be used in conscious or semi-conscious patients as they may induce vomiting, coughing, or laryngospasm.
    • Potential risks include dental trauma or soft tissue damage if inserted incorrectly
